Winning a little helps you win a little more.
All points in tennis are not created equal.
Some actually mean very little to the final outcome. They are just building blocks. You need a minimum of 24 points to win a set, with some being a lot more influential to the final outcome than others.
I just wrote an Infosys ATP analysis on the current Top 10 players in the world returning at three specific score lines. The data set is from the beginning of the 2015 season all the way up to and including Roland Garros this year.
Point Score:
- Love All
- 15-15
- 30-30
With new information like this, you never really know what you are going to find. Maybe the win percentages are all the same… why wouldn’t they be the same?
Well, as it turns out, there is a natural progression we never really knew existed. Here’s the results.
Top 10: Percentage Chance of Winning the Point:
- Love All = 37%
- 15-15 = 40%
- 30-30 = 42%
WOW! What we are witnessing here is momentum at work. One definition of momentum is “the impetus gained by a moving object.” I think that applies perfectly here.
Once the Top 10 returner gets on the scoreboard with their first point of the game, their chances rise to win the second, and so on.
This new information provides valuable insight for players and coaches to help understand the hidden dynamics of our sport. Win just a little, and you are in the driver’s seat to win a whole lot more!
I also looked at players ranked 11-20 as well. Here’s the results at all three score lines.
- Love All: Top 10 = 37% / 11-20 = 36%
- 15-15: Top 10 = 40% / 11-20 = 39%
- 30-30: Top 10 = 42% / 11-20 = 39%
This is just one element of our game where we see a clear separation between the levels. The Top 10 are only one percentage point better at Love All and 15-15, but with the opportunity to surge to break point, they are three percentage (42% to 39%) points better than players ranked 11-20.
